If you’re holding off on picking up that hot new Xbox 360 S in the coveted matte black flavor next week, but are worried that 4GB flash memory won’t be enough, rest easy. Like its big brother (and although different, like the previous Arcade hardware), the 4GB console does include a HDD bay, only it is empty. As we previously assumed rather correctly, Microsoft will indeed make the massive 250GB drive, available by default in the gloss black version already on the market, available for purchase on its own. Eventually.

New packaging for the 4GB SKU hit today showing off the side of the box, and it confirms that the 250 GB Hard Drive, as with Kinect and controllers, will be “Sold Separately.” As for when, or how much, that’s a great question. There’s no indication. Dare we hope for a price tag below $150?

If I were forced to hazard a guess, I would say that the standalone storage device would likely be in stores ready to purchase by the time Kinect drops on November 4th, since Microsoft are banking on tons of gamers either upgrading to the new, cheaper box, or jumping into Xbox 360 for the first time. It would be incredibly stupid to not have larger storage available as an option, especially going into the holiday shopping season, and since the existing 60, 120 and 250 original HDDs are now useless in the redesigned console.
