This is curious. Then again, it could be nothing.

The OFLC, Australia’s ratings board notorious for leaking games, has revealed a new listing for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, certified on July 7th. That was yesterday. According to the listing, this Vice City release is a multiplatform product, rated MA 15+, and mysteriously claims “modified” for its version. Modified, eh? In contrast, the original Vice City‘s page is still viewable, filed by Take-Two, and differs slightly from what is shown here.

Released way back 2002, Vice City has hit PS2, Xbox and PC, as well as PSP in Vice City Stories; it was also issued alongside GTA III in the Grand Theft Auto Double Pack. While San Andreas saw new life as an Xbox Original, neither GTA III or Vice City were put out over Xbox LIVE, and none have seen the light of day on PlayStation Network.

Since Xbox Originals has been discontinued,  it’s highly unlikely this would be a simple digital release of the original Xbox 1 game. As well, I can’t see Rockstar totally remaking the classic with their RAGE technology, and then re-releasing it again with the same name. Are we possibly looking at an HD port destined for XBLA and PSN, or maybe even disc? It’s plausible. Vice City has been teased a few times since the launch of GTA IV, with the manual for Episodes from Liberty City seemingly hinting at another visit to the each front location. Plus the fact that Rockstar have been super quiet on the franchise for good while now, it might be time for something, even if it’s not the “next” installment. I hear hi-resolution emulations of the PC version look pretty nice.

There’s also the lingering prediction for Grand Theft Auto V, and that it may take place in Vice City, revamped for the modern age. But that’s almost guaranteed to not apply to this, were it even true. Paging Rockstar…
