During a community panel at PAX Prime this past weekend, Duken Nukem IP owners Gearbox confirmed plans to develop their own entry in the series, separate from what’s released so far and likely a wholly internal production, and hinted we might hear about it before too long.

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford told attendees (via Kotaku): “And then soon… I know that you guys figured out that, when Gearbox acquired the franchise, we didn’t do it just to make sure we could all play Duke Forever, but because we [also] wanted to make our own Duke game.”

Soon, we’ll talk about that, but not today.

Probably a smart idea to hold off a bit, since not only are people still hung up on DNF actually coming out, but there’s also several other Gearbox projects in the immediate pipeline from various publishers. That doesn’t rule out a potential announcement before the end of the year, though.

Insider chatter has said this new Duke game will in fact be Duke Nukem Begins, a franchise reboot, which Gearbox is known to have been tinkering on as far back as 2008. Rumor has it we could be seeing it sometime in 2013, or later.
